Guilty Pleasures: A soak in the bath

I really love baths. Not just a quick dip but at least an hour soak. I've moved around a lot in the 10 years I've lived in Brighton and having a bath in my home is my number one priority. If it didn't have a bath I couldn't live there.

My bestie (who you should all be following over at her blog Hook, Like and Sink Her) is in the process of redecorating her house. She's currently ripping out her bathroom and was telling me all about her fancy shower. "Where's the bath going to go?" I asked. Then she uttered those jaw dropping words "We aren't having one." I was stunned! "Why?!" I cried. Although I knew the answer, neither Katie nor her boyfriend Tom like having baths. I've lived with them both and I can't remember either one of them ever having a bath the whole time (insert appropriate joke about them being really smelly here).

Obviously I completely respect Katie's life choice* not to have a bath - she doesn't like them - fair enough, but for me it is unthinkable!

If I wrote a list (which I often do) of all of the things I love, baths would be up there. I like them really hot (Tom thinks I'm insane over how hot I have my bath) and full of bubbles. I don't need candles or music or anything else - just a nice hot bath and some bubble bath. For me, baths are a comfort. They never fail to make me feel better if I am stressed/angry/upset (unless they are luke warm - which will endeavour to make me really cross). If I need to think I have a bath - if I don't want to think I have a bath. If I've gone without one for a week - the situation will need rectifying immediately.

The funny thing about  me having a bath, is I get in and immediately swing my legs around so they are dangling outside of the bath. Then I'll pick up a book and read for anything from 30 minutes to an hour. The last time my Mum and Richard (my stepdad) came to visit, Tom and Richard went up the pub. I'd jumped in the bath and we'd all planned to watch a film after. After a pint, Tom said "Do you think she'll be out yet?" Richard (having known me for a large proportion of my life) replied "No, we can get in another pint easy..." They returned just as I opened the bathroom door. Tom now refers to my baths as "two pinters".

Do you like a soak in the bath? Or are you more of a shower person?

* Life choice - HA! It sounds like something major (ahem...it is).

HAHAHAH two pinters, brilliant! I actually really like baths but dont have them enough and I think this maybe due to the fact I have one of those over bath showers and so have a glass panel (EUGH!) which ruins my bathing experience! Im hoping when we move properly into Brighton we will have a material curtain so I can just push it back.  In fact, maybe that will be one of my must haves on the list when hunting! Those two images are just porn to my eyes! xxxx

I love baths, we have just put in a new bathroom with a bath after only having a shower for 4 years.

  4. I should really have more baths, but I get bored and feel a bit like a whale in a tank. Shamu! I used to make myself have them so my body would relax and actually started to enjoy them.
I love that Katie isn't having a bath! If you don't like them then why pay to have one put it in. Love it! I have the the same problem as Sophie! Sitting starting at a glass screen makes me feel a llitle yucky. Also, the loo is right next to my head. I am looking forward to moving so I can have a nice bathing experience.Enjoy your future two pinters!

  5. I shower for cleanliness and bathe for pleasure when the little people are asleep, otherwise I get invaded by a small person and an array of toys. I love hot baths too, and also enjoy a good old read while I'm in there. I couldn't live in a house with no bath!

  6. I shower for cleanliness but bathe for pleasure late at night when the little people are asleep, otherwise I get invaded by a small person and an array of toys. I also like a hot bath and a good book and couldn't imagine living in a house without a bathtub. Ours is very old and cast iron. The tap is wall mounted to the side so the Mr and me even share a romantic bath for two sometimes!

  7. Thank you for the support :) That was our thinking- we both really love showers so would much rather have a big one of those!

  8. I wish I did love having a bath- purely because I think think claw-footed baths are so beautiful! But I am very excited about getting our new shower installed- it's going to be like standing in a monsoon (in a nice way).

I can understand how baths make everything feel better; I think my bathing equivalent is pyjamas, a blanket or two, and a couple of pints of hot chocolate- with a good book, obviously.

p.s. And we both do wash sometimes- promise! :)

  9. I love your blog posts, almost as much as I love my bath! We re did our bathroom last year when we moved in and made sure there was enough space for a double ended fresstanding bath for me a nd a large shower cubicle for him (that I can;t see when I am lying in the bath!) Anyway, as I said I love your blog, your site is fab, so am nominating you for a Versatile Blogger Award! Check out my most recent blog post to read all about it! x

  10. I love hot baths too. And I do the exact same thing - swinging my legs out whilst reading, to ironically 'cool' me down a bit.

  11. I'm exactly the same! I like a bit of a soak in the steaming hot bath - then cool down, read and relax and then wash! Ha!

  12. I am definietly a bath person, 9 out of ten 'full' washes is a bath! I also wave my legs out of the tub, otherwise I get too hot... is this the reason you do it? and then I let half the water out and re fill with hot till I go pruney or someone else needs the toilet (tho I give them fair warning before I get in!) In fact my twitter bio is a testament to how much I love a bath. your friends are crazy for not having one!

I love a bath but I've had to stick to the showers recently. Our bath has the taps right in the middle and has a ledge to climb over and I daren't try to climb in and out whilst being pregnant incase I can't get back out! Plus, its not worth having a bath unless its really, really warm!  Something to look forward to in September, I think :)

  15. I am a bath person, partly by necessity, because we don't actually have a shower at the moment. But even when a shower is available to me, I still prefer a bath! I read an autobiography once (I feel sure it was Michael J. Fox's, though I can't be 100% certain), and he wrote about how many baths he used to have when he was coming to terms with his Parkinson's Disease diagnosis. I do feel that baths are seriously underrated, sometimes I need one when I am feeling a bit down, or have a headache, or have period pains. I also do most of my reading in the bath, and more often than not I find myself laying in tepid water trying to get to the end of the chapter/book! I've only ever lived in one house without a bath, and that was my university halls of residence room!
