Brighton Crafters! I need you!

Calling all Brighton crafters! I need your help! On Friday 9th of November at 7pm I’ll be hosting a crafty event in aid of charity and I would love for you to come and be a part of it.

The event is part of the #imapiece campaign set up by the Craftivist Collective and Save the Children to help the Race Against Hunger campaign. This year hunger in children has risen for the first time this decade and it’s just not on. This is a political issue and as a result the craft community can help by raising awareness and getting this issue in front of the G8 summit that will be held in the UK next spring.

This is a really great opportunity to make a historical change and I do hope you’ll join me and other members of the craft community to try and make a difference. This campaign is being supported by some fabulous contemporary crafters including Sarah Corbett (from the Craftivist Collective) Mr X Stitch, Deadly Knitshade and Hilary Pullen – who you may already know from the #cbuk tweetchats and who runs Craft Blog UK.

Get involved!

The #imapiece campaign asks crafters to make three fabric jigsaw pieces stitched with thought-provoking and encouraging messages.

Piece 1 – will be sent off to the Craftivist Collective to be part of a massive art installation. The aim of this is to show the government that the craft community care and want them to use their power to make a difference.

Piece 2 – will be sent to your local MP with the words ‘I’m a piece’ stitched on it to get them supporting the campaign.

Piece 3 – will be for you to keep as a reminder of your participation. Sometimes such wide-spread issues like starving children all over the world can make you feel helpless. But even small actions like raising awareness can lead to big change. We can all do our bit.

Sign the petition – even if you haven’t got time to stitch – you can still sign the petition to encourage David Cameron to put hunger on the agenda for 2013.

The event

So now you know what it’s all about – hopefully you’ll be as excited as me to take part! I’ll be hosting a stitch along event on Friday 9th November at 7pm at the fantastic Super + Super so let’s make it an event to remember! Hopefully we can get some press attention and I’ll also be asking our local MP Caroline Lucas to come along too.

The event is free – but you’ll need a ticket which you can sign up for here. This is purely because there is limited space so if you do get a ticket please make sure you come – or if you can’t make it, then let me know so someone else can take your place.

What you need

What you’ll need to bring:

Cut out fabric jigsaw pieces: Download this jigsaw piece template and cut out 3 fabric jigsaw pieces. You might want to use bondaweb/interfacing to make the pieces a bit thicker. Or simply sew two pieces of fabric together.
Needle and embroidery thread – you can either write your message on with pen and simply embroider the words – or you might even want to cross stitch the words if you are a skilled cross stitcher!
Ideas – You’ll need to think up some ideas for what to write on your jigsaw piece for the installation. Or check out some of these ideas.
Embellishments: You might want to sew buttons or sequins on to your pieces so bring along anything you might want to add!
Refreshments: We will be providing refreshments but as it’s a Friday night feel free to BYOB for the occasion!

What we’ll provide
·         Tea/Coffee
·         Cake
·         Music to boogie too
·         The company of lots of lovely crafters!
·         Spare materials – fabric, interfacing, thread, needles – please do try and bring your own materials but don’t worry if you forget something. We’ll have some spares lying around.
·         Information on where to send your jigsaw pieces.

Other Information

This is a great opportunity to be part of history and do your part for charity. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to come along and meet other Brighton based crafters. Don’t worry if you aren’t a confident crafter – we can help you with your stitching skills!

Don’t know anyone?
Don’t worry! We’ll make sure to introduce you to other crafters at the event and you’ll soon be nattering away about your jigsaw ideas!

Can’t make it?
Ah what a shame! Don’t fret though – you too can organise a stitch along with a bunch of friends. All the resources below will help you out. If you still need help then drop me an email – I’ll be more than happy to help you organise your own event.

Have I missed something or have a question? Then please feel free to drop me an email.
